CAT6 and CAT6a are higher-performance twisted-pair network cables that support 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10 Gbps) and the higher bandwidth needed for modern AV-over-IP, 10 GbE backbones, and high-density networking. They use the same RJ45 connectors as CAT5e and look similar, but with tighter construction, improved shielding, and higher frequency ratings for better signal integrity at higher speeds.
CAT6 supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet up to 55 meters and Gigabit Ethernet at full 100 meters. The cable is rated for 250 MHz. CAT6a (augmented CAT6) supports 10 GbE at the full 100-meter Ethernet limit, with a higher 500 MHz frequency rating and significantly improved alien crosstalk performance (interference between adjacent cables in a bundle). For a new 10 GbE infrastructure, CAT6a is the right choice; for shorter 10 GbE runs or for current Gigabit Ethernet with some future-proofing, CAT6 is sufficient.
CAT5e is sufficient for Gigabit Ethernet, but several factors push commercial installations toward CAT6 or CAT6a. First, 10 GbE is becoming standard in switch uplinks, AV-over-IP backbones, and modern equipment connections. Second, the cost difference between CAT5e and CAT6 in bulk cable is small, and the labor cost of installing cable is the same regardless of category. Third, future-proofing matters: cable installed today will likely be in service for 15 to 20 years, and the standard during that time will be 10 GbE or higher.
CAT6 and CAT6a come in unshielded (UTP) and shielded (STP, F/UTP, S/FTP) variants. UTP is the standard for most installations. Shielded variants add foil shielding around the bundle (F/UTP) or around each pair plus the bundle (S/FTP) to reject electrical interference. Shielded cable is essential in industrial environments with high EMI, near transformers and motors, in 10 GbE installations near other high-bandwidth cables, and in medical and broadcast environments.
CAT6 and CAT6a come in the same jacket ratings as other twisted-pair: CMR (riser, the standard for general use), CMP (plenum, required for return-air spaces in commercial buildings), and outdoor/direct-burial variants. Always specify the right jacket for the installation. Local building and fire codes determine which rating is mandatory.
CAT6 and especially CAT6a require careful termination to maintain rated performance. The pair twist must be maintained as close to the connector as possible (untwisting reduces performance at high frequencies). CAT6-rated RJ45 plugs and keystone jacks are required: using CAT5e plugs on CAT6 cable defeats the purpose. For 10 GbE, certification testing with a cable analyzer is recommended to verify the link performs at the rated speed.

For installations that will need 10 Gigabit Ethernet (large AV-over-IP networks, high-density data centers, multi-building campuses), CAT6a is the right choice from the start. The cost difference between CAT6 and CAT6a is small in bulk cable, and the cost of re-cabling later is much higher. When in doubt, install CAT6a, especially for backbone runs and high-traffic AV paths.
CAT6 supports 10 GbE up to 55 meters in typical conditions. Beyond that length, CAT6 cannot reliably support 10 GbE and the link drops to Gigabit Ethernet or worse. For full 100-meter 10 GbE runs, use CAT6a, which is rated for that distance and frequency. The shorter range of CAT6 at 10 GbE is one of the main reasons to choose CAT6a for new installations: it removes the distance constraint and allows 10 GbE anywhere on the network.
Use shielded cable in environments with high electromagnetic interference: industrial facilities near transformers and motors, healthcare facilities near MRI and imaging equipment, broadcast and recording studios, near fluorescent lighting and dimmers, and in dense cable bundles where alien crosstalk between adjacent cables can degrade performance. Shielded cable also helps in 10 GbE installations where the higher frequencies are more susceptible to interference. Unshielded (UTP) is fine for most office, residential, and standard commercial environments.
Physically yes, but you should not. CAT6 plugs are designed with appropriate spacing and contacts for the higher-frequency signals CAT6 carries, often with features (load bars to keep the pairs properly arranged at the connector) that ensure performance at the cable's rated speed. Using CAT5e plugs on CAT6 cable can work for slower applications (Gigabit Ethernet at short distances) but defeats the purpose of installing CAT6: the link will not certify at CAT6 speeds and may fail at higher data rates. Always use CAT6-rated plugs and keystones for CAT6 cable.
