A plenum is the space, typically above a ceiling or below a floor, that serves as a chamber for cooled or heated air in inhabited buildings. Air conditioning, heating, and ventilation (HVAC) systems use these spaces to move air throughout a building. When cables are installed in plenum spaces, they must be plenum-rated: the cable jacket must be made of materials that resist burning and produce minimal toxic smoke when exposed to fire.
